CANINE OBITUARY
Rudy the Dog, longtime Mayport
Village resident and neighborhood icon,
passes
Rudy the Dog
of Mayport Village, passed quietly from this life Easter Monday, April 9, 2012,
at age 17. He was born with an eclectic
pedigree in the Spring 1995, and introduced himself to people of Mayport Village in
early September of that same year.
He arrived as a "drop-off" or
homeless dog, but his pluck and exuberance quickly made him a favorite with the
postman, exercise walkers, and the neighborhood children, some of whom have
become parents themselves in the ensuing years.
Rudy also
became a prominent fixture on the Village Social Circuit. He was a frequent guest at functions held by the
Mayport Presbyterian Church, the Marine Science Center, and was a regular guest
at parties hosted by the Greenwell Family in Pickett's old grocery store. In October 2004, Rudy's remarkable
resemblance to Toto got him a special
invitation to a Wizard of Oz party at the Marine Science Center where he participated
in a photo op with the school's costumed staff,
and Meinhardt Raabe, the actor who had played the Munchkin Coroner in
the 1939 movie.
Rudy is
survived by his daughter Moxie Greenwell of Palmer Street, and by Mookie the
Cat (house mate). Rudy was interred in a
private backyard service held at his long time adopted home at the corner of
Palmer and Broad Street. He will be
sorely missed by his family and by the many friends and well wishers who have
expressed their sadness at his passing.
